Look Younger on Your Job Search
If
you are over 40 years old and on the job hunt, you know the reality
out there. Ageism exists. Unfortunately. You have no doubt already
heard the code for “too old”, which is “overqualified for the
position.” Or, more likely, you do not get any response to your
resume or inquiry. Well, since I haven't invented a time machine yet,
and I have tried, I recommend three easy and free things you can do
today to minimize your age on paper and online.
Use
Gmail
Nothing
screams “over the hill” like an AOL email address! Really, it
makes a difference. Get a Gmail email account with your name in it.
Or as close as possible. Then update your resume and online profiles.
Use
a Google Phone Number
It's
free and you can associate any and all of your phones with it AND you
can use it instead of your personal phone numbers on resumes,
applications, etc., and never miss a call again! It is a very hip
thing to do. It shows a potential employer that you have embraced new
technology.
Use
Skype
If
you are not using Skype yet, you should be! Over 50% of my clients
had Skype interviews last year. That number will go up this year as
HR offices use Skype to interview
candidates. Be prepared so you don't run around at the last minute
getting a Webcam or a headset.
Practice
a few times with friends to get the “atmosphere” perfect for an
interview, including lighting, angles and what the wall behind you
looks like, etc. Remember to lock the dog and cat out of the room for your
Skype interviews!
These
tips won't actually take any years off, but you will appear to be
younger with modern technology. And, maybe, get your resume past the
20 something gatekeeper!
