Fantasy Football vs. Career Management

Oh, the time sucking joy and agony of your Fantasy Football League!  I  know from experience, that there is no way that I can handle the amount of time my FFL management would require, and have time for other things, like running my business!! But that's just me!

Or - could it be you too? I met with a client who is a millennial, (or GenY, those creatives born 1980-2000), and as we discussed his career track, he let me know that although he had a great job (which he quit), and 9 years of experience, he just didn't like what he as doing and needed to change. I asked him what activities he'd done in the past 9 years to manage his career development, and after a long pause I said "if you had spent as much time managing your career as you did your Fantasy Football League, we wouldn't be sitting here." He said that was a great analogy.

Life is full of distractions, and like everyone, I spend hours doing pointless activities...which are good for us, so don't stop! Just stop letting those activities interfere with the important stuff....like...Career Management. Whether you are working or looking for a job/career, Career Management is more than updating your resume and Linked In profile. Just think - you will spend more time WORKING than any other activity.

Unfortunately, our society does not spend time or money teaching us how to manage our careers. Oh, maybe we had a class or two in high school or college, but mainly, we are on our own to navigate the choppy waters of All Things Career. Some us just fall into a job or career, some of us drift around trying to find something satisfying, and some of us know exactly what we want and reap the rewards. Think about it: I'll bet you know someone that fits all or one of these descriptions. Maybe you do too!

Wherever you may be in your Career Management process, it is never too late to get organized, focused, and find success! Just think, if you can build a winning Fantasy Football League, you can build a winning career path too!
