Resolve to Avoid the HR Department in 2010!

It's that time of year again when some of us venture a New Year's Resolution or two. Every year I put - "lose 10 pounds" on my list and every year, somehow I don't lose 10 pounds. So this year, it's lose 5 pounds. Time will tell if I can do it!

If you're still looking for a new gig/job (chances are most of you are) - despite the fact that the "recession is over" (really?), I want you to put one thing on your resolution list: Avoid the Human Resources Department this year. Why? Well, as an ex-HR person, I can tell you that HR is not your friend!!! They are there to "weed you out" - basically. Think about it: they need to quickly screen out 100's of resumes. That is their job, eliminating candidates. Oh, they do some other stuff too, cutting benefits, laying people off, etc!

When a job posting says "No Phone Calls" that is the HR office saying they don't want to hear from you. Well, don't call them. Keep in mind tho, they are not the Hiring Manager (HM). You've read it all before - "get to the hiring manager". Well, I will say the same thing - the Hiring Manager may take your call, and you could save him/her hours of time reviewing resumes. So why not try? Can't figure out who the HM is? Call the receptionist and ask "who is the hiring supervisor for the IT Dept?" Then hang up, and call them. It works! Try it.

Just don't call the HR Department. They are not your taking calls!
